چکیده
Selective oxidation experiments at 700 ◦C in binary and ternary iron-based model alloys containing Al, Cr, Mn, and Si were carried out. The internal oxidation behaviour along grain boundaries and inside ferrite grains was analyzed by LOM, SEM and ToF-SIMS. Oxygen isotope exchange revealed the location of fast diffusion pathways in the alloy. Numerical calculations of oxide distributions were compared to experimental findings, revealing that oxygen transport within ferrite grains is significantly lower than reported from literature. Discrepancies between simulations and experiments were ∗Dr. Michael AUINGER ([email protected]) ∗∗Dr. Vera G. PRAIG ([email protected]) Preprint submitted to Corrosion Science April 17, 2015 discussed. The presented hypothesis of oxygen trapping represents an important viewpoint to explain internal oxidation in metallic alloys.

The Effect of the Third Element Cr on Oxidation Behavior of Fe - x Cr - 10 Al ( at . % ) Alloys at 900 o C
Alloys Fe-(0, 5, 10)Cr-10Al (all in at.%) were oxidized at 900 o C in 1 atm oxygen to study the effect of Cr additions on the oxidation behavior. The oxidation kinetics was recorded with a thermal microbalance. The morphologies and microstructures of the oxide scales were examined using SEM, EDS, and XRD. Fe-10Al developed an Al2O3-rich scale during the initial stage of oxidation, and a non-pro...
متن کاملRoom Temperature Oxidation of Al-Cu-Fe and Al-Cu-Fe-Cr Quasicrystals
We have investigated formation of oxides on quasicrystalline and crystalline alloy surfaces of similar composition, in different oxidizing environments. This includes a comparison between a quaternary orthorhombic approximate of Al-Cu-Fe-Cr quasicrystal and the ternary AI-Cu-Fe quasicrystalline and crystalline phases. We noted that each sample showed the following common trends: preferential ox...
متن کاملCoupling Binary and Ternary Information in Assessing the Fcc/Hcp Relative Phase Stability and Martensitic Transformation in Fe-Mn-Co and Fe-Mn-Si Alloys
This paper presents a study of the composition dependence of the fcchcp martensitic transformation temperatures and relative phase stability of these structures in Fe-Mn-Co and Fe-Mn-Si alloys. The approach combines new experimental determinations of M, and A, in the binary systems Fe-Mn and Fe-Co, and in both ternary systems with a critical analysis of the previously published experimental dat...
متن کاملConcentrations of metals in water, sediment and tissues of Cyprinus carpio L., 1758 from Mogan Lake (Turkey)
In this study, some metals (aluminium, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, lead, zinc and vanadium) and metalloid (silicon) were determined in water, sediment and some tissues of fish Cyprinus carpio from Mogan Lake. Fish samples were caught in March 2007. As a result of the examination of metals in the water aluminium has the lowest and silicon has the highest concentration. In sediment samples...
متن کاملPrecipitation of nitrides in iron-based binary and ternary alloys; influence of defects and transformation-misfit stresses
The effect of the initial microstructure (recrystallized or cold-rolled) on the nitride-precipitation process upon gaseous nitriding of ternary, ferritic, Fe-Cr-Al alloy was investigated at 450°C. In the recrystallized specimens, precipitation of metastable ternary, cubic, NaCl-type mixed Cr1xAlxN took place, whereas in the cold-rolled specimens precipitation of firstly binary cubic NaCltype Cr...
